Welcome to Croatia!
The Republic of Croatia, or Croatia as it is known around the world, is located in the south east of Europe at the intersection of the Pannonian Plain and the Mediterranean Sea. Croatia has become one of Europe's travel hotspots with its long and beautiful coastline, its rich and varied history, pretty Venetian towns with terracotta roofed houses, craggy mountain ranges, quaint Croatia hotels and delectable Adriatic cuisine.
Croatia is a haven for "sun worshippera", a gourmet's delight, and its untouched countryside offers many opportunities for cycling, hiking and even mountaineering, making it an adventure destination.
Croatia is known to have the best coastline in the whole of Europe. Unlike some of the other Mediterranean holiday destinations, the Croatian coastline has escaped the ravages of excessive expansion and retained its pristine beauty, and is the ideal place to take a Croatia tour. There are more than 1000 islands off the Croatian shores which have a warm Mediterranean sun that drives away the autumn and winter blues.
However, whilst the coast is its main drawcard, there are many other things to see and do in Croatia. Apart from the beautiful scenery, another major attraction in Croatia is its rich and colourful history and culture, which is almost a thousand years old. Many of the structures from the first century are preserved perfectly even today. Dubrovnik, one of the highlights of a tour in Croatia, is an old, walled city in the south of Croatia with a timeless grace. There are many hotels in Dubrovnik to choose from, and a great way of exploring the Old Town and surrounding countryside is on a tour in Dubrovnik. There are many more symbols of Croatia's ancient history along its coastline.
The capital Zagreb is also Croatia's biggest city. Tourists who visit Zagreb for the first time are welcomed by a vibrant and almost luxurious metropolis, quite unlike the communist-dominated, stark and archaic city they expect to see. Zagreb is a city with all the modern conveniences and quality Croatia hotels, as well as a beautiful ancient town with lots of greenery.
The interiors of Croatia offer their own attractions. Istria, which is inland, is almost comparable with Tuscany, with its rolling green hills, quaint Croatia hotels, fine local wines, good food and a wide assortment of white and black truffles. Zagorje, in the interior region of north Croatia is home to many historic castles set against the backdrop of verdant hills.
Slovania in eastern Croatia is not a very popular destination. But even here, there is Osijek, the majestic city along the river Drava which is worth visiting. There is Vukovar, which suffered the worst ravages of the civil war and is rebuilding itself with a heroic zeal. There are castles and vineyards which beckon the tourist.
The long coastline is ideal for water sports. There are many islands and marinas, which offer ample sailing opportunities, such as the Kvarner region on the Istria peninsular. The annual Vanka Regule extreme sports festival is held every year on the island of Brac.
