Weather in Croatia

The climate of Croatia is shaped by its geography, which is a mix of mountains, forests, plains and a long coastline. It has two climatic zones: the Mediterranean and the Continental.

The coast and the islands of Croatia from Kvarner and Istria in the North up to Dalmatia have a Mediterranean climate. The northern region of the Adriatic is cooler than the southern region. The average temperature along the coast in summer ranges between 24 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius. The interiors of Istria are more pleasant, with a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. The average temperature along the coast in winter ranges between 2 degrees Celsius (in the north) and 9 degrees Celsius.

The summer along the coast is extremely dry. This sometimes causes devastating fires. Islands farthest from the mainland are the driest. Vis Island, for instance, has an annual rainfall of only 557 mm, while the Island of Brac has an annual rainfall of 952 mm. Winter brings twice the precipitation levels of summer and is the rainiest period in Croatia. Dubrovnik is one of the wettest regions along Croatia's coast and has heavy rains between October and December. Snow along the coast is a rarity.
